Without further ado, here is a 1hr 20min conversation with political scientist Alexander Chipman-Koty, in which he discusses books by Western writers about China. I chime in occasionally with parallels to fiction. You’ll get a bunch of good book recos out of it.

I really enjoyed filming this with Alexander and, while it’s not polished, I am sincere in my hope that you’ll enjoy it. It’s very “podcasty” so you can throw it on while you’re cooking or whatever.

Changes to the newsletter

I’m changing a couple things on the Substack profile. You’ll see more indications that CM is about “literature”—i.e. all books—instead of only poetry. This is a shift from the original purpose of this newsletter (a shift which, however, I hope will be even more valuable to you).

I am also reserving the right to depart from the strict 10:30am Tuesday send time, to make CM more flexible.
